ABOUT Camano Island Democrats
Welcome to the Stanwood Camano Community! Politically we are a purple community, with both Democrats and Republicans in office. Often initiatives that are considered “progressive” will pass by the will of the people. In 2016, these included Initiative 735 asking our state to urge the federal government to declare “Corporations are not People” and Initiative 1433 to raise the minimum wage. In past years, our community voted for marriage equality, decriminalization of marijuana and have worked to enhance reasonable protections for gun ownership. We support strong schools, quality healthcare access for all people and protections of our natural resources. We value families and working people, believing in equity and justice for all.
Getting involved in politics in our community can be confusing. We have two Democratic Clubs-The Stanwood Democrats and The Camano Island Democrats. These are volunteer led, membership organizations. Island County Democrats is a strong and active progressive voice in our community and is affiliated with the Washington State Democrats. In addition, our State is organized into Legislative Districts and Camano is represented by the 10th LD Democrats covering the northern part of Snohomish County, all of Island County and the Southern part of Skagit County.
Camano Island Democrats normally meet at 7 pm on the third Thursday of every month (except August) at Camano Island Library at Terry’s Corner. Please check the calendar for date changes as the library is not always available Thursdays. Speakers in 2018 included candidates Rick Larson, Janet St Clair, Dave Paul, Scott McMullen and Rick Felicci. We have also had the opportunity to hear from Mike Kreidler, Washington State Insurance Commissioner, Mayor Leonard Kelley, the Stanwood Camano Food Bank, Fire Chief from Camano Island Fire District and the Stanwood Camano School District.
The Stanwood Democrats meet at 10:00AM on the second Saturday of each month for discussion, presentations and community building. Currently, the meetings are held at the Stanwood Senior Center Conference Room. The Stanwood Democrats and Camano Island Democrats are interested in electing Democrats for local office and supporting issues consistent with Democratic values.
